Temples of Dakka and Maharraqa

The temples of Dakka and Maharraqa stand together at Wadi el-Seboua, on the shore of Lake Nasser. They were moved here in the 1960s to save them from the rising water, and they show how the Egyptian and Nubian worlds mixed in the last centuries BC.

The Temple of Dakka

Dakka was dedicated to Thoth, god of wisdom. It was begun by Arkamani, a king of Meroe in Nubia, in the 3rd century BC, and enlarged by Ptolemaic and Roman rulers. Its tall pylon is still complete, and you can climb inside it for a view over the lake.

The Temple of Maharraqa

Maharraqa is a small Roman temple to Isis and Serapis that was never finished. It is known for its spiral staircase, the only one in a temple in Egypt, which leads up to the roof.
