Egypt is one of the best-value destinations in the world, and you do not need a big budget to see the pyramids and the temples. Here is how to travel well for less.
When to go
Summer, from June to August, has the lowest prices on hotels and cruises. May and September are a good compromise between heat and value.
Getting around
The train between Cairo, Luxor and Aswan is cheaper than flying, and the overnight sleeper saves a hotel night. See our guide to the Cairo to Luxor sleeper train.
Where to stay
A 3- or 4-star hotel or a standard Nile cruise costs much less than 5-star. In Luxor, small hotels on the West Bank are good value.
Eating
Local food is cheap and filling: koshari, ful and taameya cost very little. See Egyptian food.
Sightseeing
Sharing a private tour with friends or family cuts the cost per person. Choose your extra tickets, such as Tutankhamun’s tomb, carefully.
