Is Egypt safe to visit? It is the question we hear most often from American and British travelers, and it deserves a straight answer. Millions of tourists visit Egypt every year, and the vast majority have a trouble-free trip. The main tourist areas, from the pyramids to Luxor, Aswan and the Red Sea resorts, are busy, well policed and used to visitors. As anywhere, it helps to know the risks and plan sensibly.

Check the official advice
Before you book, read the travel advice from the US State Department or the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Both advise against travel to some areas, such as North Sinai, the borders with Libya and Sudan, and parts of the Western Desert. These are far from the usual tourist routes. Advice changes, so check it again shortly before you travel and make sure your travel insurance covers your trip.

Security at tourist sites
You will see police and security checks at airports, hotels, museums and major monuments. Tourist police patrol the main sites. Internal flights and private transfers with licensed drivers are the safest and most comfortable way to get around.
Independent Travel vs. Nile CruiseEveryday risks
The most common problems are minor: persistent sellers, overcharging, and touts offering camel rides or “free” guiding at the pyramids. A good guide deals with all of this for you. Use official taxis or ride apps, agree prices in advance, and keep an eye on your bag in crowded markets. Road traffic is chaotic, so take care crossing streets.

Health
Drink bottled water, eat freshly cooked food and peel fruit. Use sunscreen and drink plenty of water, especially from May to September.

Women travelers
Women travel in Egypt alone or in groups every day. Dressing modestly, covering shoulders and knees, reduces unwanted attention. Traveling with a guide and driver makes things much easier. See our tours for solo women.
