Itinerary
Abu Simbel day trip from Aswan by coach
We collect you from your Aswan hotel or cruise ship at around 4:00 AM and you join the coach for the three-and-a-half-hour drive south across the desert. Ramses II had the two temples cut into the sandstone cliffs at the southern edge of his empire around 1250 BC. The Great Temple, guarded by four seated colossi about 20 meters high, is dedicated to Amun-Ra, Ra-Horakhty, Ptah and the deified king himself; its walls show his battle against the Hittites at Kadesh. The smaller temple honors Queen Nefertari and the goddess Hathor. In the 1960s both were cut into blocks and rebuilt 65 meters higher to save them from Lake Nasser. You have about two hours at the temples before the drive back, arriving in Aswan in the early afternoon.
